Statement From Viva88Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl H. Tisch

Governor Cuomo's leadership has helped put education issues on the front burner, and that's where those issues need to be if we're going to reform our education system and build a bright economic future for all New Yorkers.

Richard Parsons and the entire Commission have done an extraordinary job of laying out a clear roadmap of how we can improve education for all of our kids. The Commission's recommendations - from expanding early childhood education and Career and Technical Education (CTE) to elevating standards for the teaching profession - are well-aligned with the Regents Reform Agenda and are areas prioritized in the State’s Race to the Top funding and programs.

The Board of Regents Reform Agenda is focused on making sure every student graduates from high school ready for college and career. Enacting these critical reforms will be a major step towards fulfilling that goal.

These proposals come at a critical time for New York and can build on the progress we have made together over the past year. Today more than 500 districts are implementing approved teacher evaluation plans; and every school in the state is implementing the new Common Core standards adopted by 45 states.

The Commission has done a remarkable job of capturing the key elements of reform and encapsulating them into a series of very achievable recommendations. The Board of Regents looks forward to working with the Governor and the Legislature as we incorporate these recommendations into the comprehensive Regents Reform Agenda. The challenge is funding these crucial programs so they become part of the daily educational lives of students throughout the state. Our students need action.
