Delivery of 2021–2022 School Year State-Provided Growth Results for Advisory Purposes Only and Distribution of File Layouts
Date:
October 31, 2022

I am writing to provide you with information about the availability of 2021–2022 school year State-provided growth results that are calculated by the Viva88Education Department (Viva88 or “the Department"). The Department expects to make data available for teachers, principals, and schools of grades 4–8 English Language Arts (ELA) and math as well as principals and schools of grades 9–12 and grades 4–12 on or around Tuesday, November 8, 2022.

Pursuant to Chapter 59 of the Laws of 2019, which amended the Student Performance Category requirements of Education Law §3012-d, State-provided growth results are not required to be used for Annual Professional Performance Reviews (APPR) and are only provided for informational purposes.1

Accessing Growth Results

Growth files will be available to authorized users on the secure Information and Reporting Services Portal (IRSP). For information about accessing the IRSP, see the . When users log in to the portal, a folder that includes several files will be available for download.

  • If you have difficulties accessing the data files on the IRS Portal, please review the following page for access information: .
  • If you are an authorized user of the IRS Portal and are have difficulty logging in to the portal, contact the Viva88 Delegated Account System (SEDDAS) help desk at seddas@nysed.gov.

For questions about the data provided in the files, contact evaldata@nysed.gov and specify “Growth Data Layouts” in the subject line of your email.

Using Student Growth Results for Continuous Improvement

The information in the available data files reflects student growth captured between the 2020–2021 and 2021–2022 school years.2These results can be particularly useful when combined with local data to gain additional understanding of individual student academic growth over time as well as the aggregated growth of students whose records are linked to teachers, principals, schools, and districts.

Since the Department does not plan to incorporate growth as an indicator when making accountability determinations in 2022–2023 using 2021–2022 school year data, the Student Information Repository System (SIRS) 112 Accountability Growth report will not be made available again this year. In lieu of that report, the information in the available files is intended to provide an overview of student growth by individual student, teacher, principal3, and school.

Two measures of student growth data will be available:

  • The unadjusted student growth measure which accounts for students’ prior achievement only.
  • The adjusted student growth measure which takes into account prior achievement as well as student demographics (e.g., English language learner, students with disabilities, and economic disadvantaged) and school characteristics.

In particular, see the following student-level files:

Report Title Report Description
[Teacher/Principal/School]-Student 4-8.csv These files may contain multiple records per student. Each student record contains available student growth percentile (SGP) scores for ELA or math for the 2021–2022 school year, plus the historical test scores and other student demographic information used to calculate student grow percentiles.
[ELA/Alg]_student.csv These files contain one record per student and the data are used to calculate the Grades 9–12 SGPs, including the historical test scores and other student demographic variables.
GRE_student.csv This file contains one record per student. Demographic variables and prior Regents assessment history used to the calculate the Grades 9–12 comparative growth in Regents Examinations passed measure are included in this file.

1For additional information regarding the APPR Transition Period (the 2015–2016 through 2018–2019 school years), please see the Department’s .
2Since growth results were last distributed in the 2018–2019 school year, enhancements were made to the grades 4–8 and 9–12 growth models to reduce data collection, in response to changes in data collection, and to include more students in the models. See the March 2022 “Growth Updates” on the State Growth Measures Toolkits site more information.
3Only principals for whom Staff Assignment records were submitted by the district receive growth results.
