The Office of Higher Education consists of the Office of Teacher and Leader Development; the Office of Teaching Initiatives; the Office of College and University Evaluation; the Office of Postsecondary Access, Support, and Success; the Office of Information and Reporting Services; and the Office of School Personnel Review and Accountability. The Office of Higher Education and program office staff work together to draft items for the Board of Regents to make changes to education policy and regulations. The Office of Higher Education is also responsible for creating the Statewide Plan for Higher Education.
The intern will work with the Deputy Commissioner of Higher Education, Chief of Staff, and program office staff to contribute to the Statewide Plan for Higher Education 2026-2034. The intern will be responsible for assisting in researching and compiling data and will have the opportunity to create data visualization sets that showcase the changing higher education landscape. In addition, the intern will be able to participate in planning stakeholder engagement events, helping to gather critical feedback from the field. Specifically, the intern will:
- Assist the Chief of Staff in compiling research and data from various sectors and sources for the Statewide Plan for Higher Education.
- Create data visualization sets to show changes in enrollment, funding, and programs across various sectors of the higher education landscape.
- Work closely with the Deputy Commissioner, Chief of Staff, and program office staff to plan events to gather feedback from stakeholders via webinars, ThoughtExchange surveys, and public hearings.
- Undertake special projects at the direction of the Deputy Commissioner related to the Statewide Plan for Higher Education. This activity will allow the intern to be engaged in important activities involved in implementing education policy and guidance in New York State
The intern will have the opportunity to contribute to education policy in NYS by assisting in compiling and analyzing research for the Statewide Plan for Higher Education. They will have the chance to showcase data visualization skills and contribute to a significant policy document with a broad audience. They will have the opportunity to learn how the NYS Education Department functions as well as develop a deep understanding of the higher education sector in NYS. They will have the opportunity to develop professional relationships with program office staff.

20-29 hours per week. Preference for onsite but hybrid would be okay too.
